Interview with Tyler Lang, CFA, CEO of Journey Advisory Group, Recognized with 5 Stars on Newsweek’s List of America’s Top Financial Advisory Firms

Disclosure: Newsweek's America's Top Financial Advisory Firms 2026, published in partnership with Plant-A Insights Group, is an annual ranking that evaluated over 16,000 SEC-registered financial advisory firms. To be eligible, firms were required to have more than $20 million in assets under management, a minimum of three wealth advisers, at least five individual clients, at least two years of SEC registration, clean disciplinary records, and the availability of portfolio management services to individual investors. Firms were scored on asset growth (short-term and long-term), client base growth, credentialed adviser expertise, client-to-adviser ratios, and breadth of service offerings. The top 1,000 firms were recognized and assigned star ratings based on their composite scores. Journey Advisory Group received a 5-star rating for 2026. Firms do not pay to be evaluated or included in the ranking; however, the firm paid a fee for permission to use the logo when marketing the award. We recently sat down with Tyler Lang, CFA, Founder and CEO of Journey Advisory Group, a fee-based, fiduciary Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) serving the Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Dayton regions. Journey Advisory Group was recognized with a five-star rating on Newsweek’s 2026 list of America’s Top Financial Advisory Firms, a ranking based on an analysis of more than 15,000 SEC-registered advisory firms.

At Valitana, we build the real-time analytics, compliance, and portfolio management software that institutional structured-credit teams rely on to replace fragmented legacy systems and make faster, better-informed decisions. We were curious how that same discipline, meaning data-driven processes, rigorous risk oversight, and modern technology, translates to private wealth management. Tyler shared how Journey Advisory Group brings an institutional level of sophistication to the individuals and families it serves.

Q: Your firm describes itself as offering institutional-level sophistication with boutique-level service. What does institutional-grade investment management actually mean for an individual client?

Tyler Lang: It means the people managing your money follow the same disciplined process a large institution would, applied to your personal goals. We run investment management in-house, with our own research and trading, rather than outsourcing portfolios to a third party. That gives us direct control over how decisions are made and lets us build proprietary strategies. For a client, the practical benefit is consistency: your portfolio is built on a repeatable framework, not on one advisor’s hunches, and we can explain the reasoning behind every position.

Q: Institutional managers increasingly run on real-time data and integrated systems rather than spreadsheets. How important are technology and data to your process?

Tyler Lang: They are central. The quality of any investment decision depends on the quality and timeliness of the information behind it. We have moved away from fragmented tools toward integrated systems that give our team a clear, current view of portfolios, risk, and performance. That lets us spend less time reconciling data and more time on analysis and on conversations with clients. The firms that do this well, at every scale, are the ones that turn good data into sound decisions quickly.

Q: AI is reshaping a lot of financial workflows. Where does it fit at your firm, and where does it not?

Tyler Lang: We use AI as a tool that helps our team work more efficiently, for example with research, drafting, and surfacing information faster. What it does not do is replace the human relationship or make investment decisions for us. A client’s plan involves judgment about their life, their family, and their goals, and that requires a person who knows them. We are intentionally measured about this: AI supplements our advisors; it does not stand in for them.

Q: Your readers live in a world of strict compliance and risk oversight. How do you think about managing risk and staying aligned with each client’s goals?

Tyler Lang: Risk management starts with understanding what a client actually needs the money to do. From there, the surrounding planning relationship determines how an allocation fits each person’s plan. As a fiduciary, we are legally obligated to act in the client’s best interest, and because we are fee-based and do not earn commissions on investment products, our advice is not influenced by what we might sell. We also keep client-to-advisor ratios intentionally low, with a primary and secondary advisor plus dedicated support, so nothing slips through the cracks.

Q: For someone deciding whether to keep managing their finances on their own, when does it make sense to bring in a fiduciary advisor?

Tyler Lang: Usually at an inflection point: approaching retirement, selling a business, receiving an inheritance, or the loss of a spouse. These are moments where the decisions get complex and the cost of a mistake goes up. As an independent, family and employee-owned firm, Journey Advisory Group is built to walk through those moments with people, not to push a product. If you find yourself spending more time worrying about your finances than feeling confident about them, that is usually a sign it is worth a conversation.
